Arthritis is a common condition that leads to pain and inflammation in the joints. In the UK, around 10 million people have arthritis and it can affect people of all ages, including children.
There are two main types of arthritis, including osteoarthritis (caused by wear and tear and loss of cartilage) and rheumatoid arthritis, when the body's immune system targets affected joints.
Common arthritis joint symptoms include joint pain, tenderness, swelling, decreased range of motion and weakness and muscle wasting.
The symptoms of arthritis you experience will vary depending on the type you have. Arthritis can cause permanent joint changes, some visible (eg. knobby finger joints) and some only visible on X-ray.
While there is no cure for arthritis, there are many treatments that can help slow down the progression, and nutrition in particular has been shown to play a pivotal role in reducing the inflammation and symptoms.
One 'superfood' which has gained acclaim in relation to arthritis is Turmeric, which according to the Arthritis Foundation, may help to reduce the pain, inflammation and stiffness related to the condition. It works by blocking inflammatory cytokines and enzymes, as well as by modifying the immune system response.
Nutritional Therapist Yasmin Muswell discusses the benefits of turmeric for arthritis here:
Bio-Curcumin Advanced™ utilises the world’s preferred bioavailable curcumin extract along with a specialised and clinically studied form of Boswellia serrata extract. The combination has been proven to deliver up to seven times more free and bioactive curcumin into the bloodstream than regular curcumin extracts, as well as a precise ratio of boswellic acids, which have been shown to effectively reduce inflammation.
