'I would find myself looking for a bathroom, so I could strip down and cool off'

My initial experience of menopause brought with it weight gain, hair loss, mood swings, hot flashes, fatigue, joint pain... and so the list went on. My family doctor told me that it was just my age, and that’s the price we pay for getting older. That did not sit right with me... I wasn’t ready to accept the diagnosis, and I couldn’t imagine losing any more hair. My husband used to say 'I was shedding like a dog’ and hot flashes would come at the most inconvenient times. I would find myself looking for a bathroom, so I could strip down and cool off. This all started me on a journey to get well again. I began a journey of researching and learning which would last several years. I took specialised courses on health and diet, attended seminars and complied all the information I had gathered. Then, I started applying my new found knowledge to my lifestyle. I learned how certain vegetables, fruits, grains (not wheat), meats, fish, herbs and teas can help reduce the symptoms of menopause, and what foods to avoid to keep my hormones in balance. Working out became part of my lifestyle, and I now do short, intense workouts that last about 45 minutes, 5 days a week. My diet consists mainly of fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, grass fed beef, organic chicken and wild salmon. I also take collagen in my tea in the morning to help my skin, joints and ligaments. My message to other women going through the menopause is to know that there is so much you can do to overcome the symptoms. Trust me, you do not have to live with the life alternating symptoms.
