An ode to bedtime!

The change of seasons always brings a new enthusiasm for bedtime.

Just like that, the first frost arrives, and with it, a sudden urge to get back into bed as early as possible.

With this priority shift, that little-known concept of ‘the sleep spiral’ becomes all the more relevant… and important.

The sleep spiral refers to the slow, strategic readying of body and mind for rest, and it’s something which modern lifestyles sadly often seem to work against, rather than in favour of.

Winter, however, does provide a welcome and ample opportunity to get the ‘sleep spiral’ back on track. Mainly, by gifting us dark nights and cold weather with which to tap into our natural hunker-down-and-hibernate instincts. A perfect foundation for sleep, if ever there was one.

It’s probably for this reason, that a lot more of my decisions at this time of year are made with bedtime - and indeed ‘the sleep spiral’ - in mind.

It’s the coffee that doesn’t get drunk after 5pm.

The run that never gets skipped, because it makes falling asleep easier.

The bed that’s always made first thing… a small gift to my later-the-same-day self.

The ‘book time’, piano practice, study… all the things that use up mental energy, making it easier to ‘power down’ come 10pm.

There’s also the saunas, the fresh air, the milky drinks, candles and baths… all of which feed into the headspace on which regular, sound sleep depends.

So comforting is this idea of a ‘sleep spiral’, that it’s been encapsulated into a complete bedtime solution, coined by Devon Duvets.

Their ‘Sleep Spiral’ package includes 100% natural, soft filled bedding products (a duvet, topper and two pillows) along with an air parfum, ritual card and bookmark. There’s also a short story and how-to guide, written by Devon Duvets’ Founder Pauline Beijen, which is designed to relax and inspire, thereby supporting the realisation of myriad of wellness goals, via the all-powerful medium of regenerative, peaceful sleep.

The premise of this product revolves around this important idea of sleep being the sum of small decisions, repeated daily, and surrendering to the power of nature as a way of better leaning into this process.
