Apparently, ‘yet’ is one of the most powerful words you can have in your vocabulary.
I suppose it’s kind of obvious, really, but in that one, lone syllable, lies the unlikeliest (but maybe most effective) antidote to a ‘fixed mindset.’
It’s the difference between…
‘I don’t know how to work, be a mum… AND be a student at the same time!’
and
‘I don’t know how to work, be a mum… AND be a student at the same time, YET!!’
It’s a small difference, but according to the laws of ‘Growth Mindset’, it’s this attention to detail that can make the difference between being defeated… or determined.
This week in particular, the importance of being more ‘yet’ oriented has been brought into much sharper focus.
I’ve had to watch webinars, engage on learning forums, try and study whilst navigating caring for and entertaining two children off school for half term.
It’s certainly been a stark contrast to my previous student experiences, but it has proved one thing, if nothing else, and that is that it IS possible.
Easy… no.
But possible…yes!
As to whether this will still be the case a year from now, it remains to be seen.
However, for now, it’s felt somewhat satisfying to disprove one of my most favourite tropes, that ‘there aren’t enough hours in the day!’
As it turns out, there just about are, as the sum of last week’s ‘stolen’ study minutes (20 minutes waiting outside a gymnastics class, 10 minutes while dinner was cooking, and so on) is not to be sniffed at.
The only real trade off so far?
Well, social media, mainly, and the Daily Mail website, perhaps. On reflection, it might have been these ‘time sponges’ giving me a false measure of busyness, in the past.
So much so, in fact, that removed from the lifestyle equation, ‘yet’ becomes both plausible…and maybe even believable.
