Let’s Talk Ovaries

Ovarian cancer is the seventh most common cancer, and the eighth most common cause of death from cancer in women in the world. Ovarian cancer is defined as cancer arising from the cells in and around the ovaries and fallopian tubes. There are many different types of ovarian tumours, with each classified by the types of cells and tissue affected. Because the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer are frequently and mistakenly attributed to other causes, a high proportion (55-58%) of cases of the disease in England and Northern Ireland have a late stage diagnosis. This is why raising awareness of the symptoms is so important, and one of the key aims of World Ovarian Cancer Day. The symptoms include boating, feeling full quickly, abdominal pain, frequent need to urinate, changes in bowel habits, extreme fatigue and unexplained weight loss. One way of remembering these ‘red flags’ is through the #thinkteal acronym: T Toilet habit changes E Energy levels dropping A Abdominal pain/swelling L Loss of appetite Later today, we’ll be sharing the stories of women who are living with, or have overcome, ovarian cancer.
